Fort Worth Move-Out Junk Removal Checklist
Most of what goes wrong with move-out clearance is timing rather than volume. This is the sequence that avoids paying to move things you were about to throw away.

Four weeks out
Decisions, not action. This is the week that determines everything else.
- 1
Walk every space
Including the garage, the attic, the shed and the yard. Note what is definitely not going.
- 2
Measure the new place
Doorways as well as rooms. This is where you find out the sectional does not fit.
- 3
Apply the replace test
If replacing it at the other end costs less than moving it, it is not going.
- 4
Mark what stays behind
Physically. Tape or a sticker. Ambiguity on moving day is how the wrong things travel.
Three weeks out
The clearance itself. Early enough that you then pack a smaller house.
- 1
Book the pre-move clearance
Photographs, quote, slot. Garage and attic first — that is where the volume is.
- 2
Start donation runs
Anything genuinely usable, before it gets buried under packing materials.
- 3
Deal with hazardous items
Paint, chemicals, fuel and batteries need household hazardous waste disposal, and no mover will take them.
- 4
Confirm the mover survey
If they are quoting on contents, have them survey after the clearance, not before.
Moving week and after
- 1
Pack the house that is left
Noticeably smaller than the house you started with.
- 2
Movers load only what is going
Nothing gets carried twice and nothing arrives that you did not want.
- 3
Book the post-move clear for the day after
Not the same day. With the van gone there is no ambiguity about what remains.
- 4
Walk through before handover
Garage, attic, shed, yard, and behind every door. Leftovers cost deposits.
The places people forget to check
Every one of these has cost somebody a deposit deduction.
- The attic hatch, and what is above it
- Behind and under the deck
- The shed and anything leaning against it
- The side return down the fence line
- Garage rafters and overhead racks
- Under the stairs and in the water heater closet
- Curtain rods, brackets and shelf fixings
- The area behind the compactor or bin enclosure
Two clearances is the pattern that works
One three weeks before the move, one the day after it. Both can be booked together.
FAQ
Related questions
- Should I clear before or after the movers?
- Both, and for different reasons. Before, so you do not pay to relocate things you do not want. After, so nothing is left behind against your deposit or your closing.
- What will movers refuse to take?
- Hazardous materials universally — paint, chemicals, fuel, propane, ammunition. Many also decline perishables, plants and anything they consider a liability. There is a fuller list in the movers guide.
- When exactly should I book the post-move clear?
- The day after the move. Same-day means the crew arrives into a half-loaded house and cannot tell what is going.
