Why will movers not take a can of paint?

A moving van is a sealed metal container that reaches very high temperatures in Texas. Anything flammable in it is a serious fire risk, which is why this refusal is industry-wide rather than a particular company being awkward.

Can you take what the movers refused?

The non-hazardous half, yes — furniture, appliances, garage contents and anything not worth relocating. Paint, chemicals, fuel and batteries need household hazardous waste disposal, which we do not operate.

What about my propane grill?

The grill itself is fine. The tank is not — disconnect it and exchange or dispose of it separately.

When should I deal with all this?

Three to four weeks out. Household hazardous waste collection runs on a schedule and you do not want to be discovering that the week you move.

Three categories, three different reasons

Hazardous materials are refused because a moving van is a sealed metal box that sits in the sun, and anything flammable, pressurised or reactive in there is a genuine fire risk. This category is non-negotiable across the industry.

Perishables are refused because they spoil, leak and attract pests, and a van in transit for a week is the worst possible environment for them.

Liability items — irreplaceable documents, jewelry, cash, medication — are usually not so much refused as strongly declined, because a mover cannot insure them meaningfully and does not want the argument.

The non-allowable list, and what to do instead
