Furniture before a move

Furniture Removal Before Moving in Fort Worth

Furniture is where moving costs concentrate. It is heavy, it takes up volume, and it needs wrapping and handling — so a single unwanted sofa can account for a meaningful share of a long-distance quote.

Do it before the survey, not after

Long-distance movers quote from a survey of what is in the house. If the survey happens before you have cleared, the quote includes everything you were about to get rid of — and revising it afterwards is not always straightforward.

The order that saves the most is: decide what is going, remove what is not, then have the mover survey the house. The estimate then reflects the actual move.

For a local hourly move the effect is smaller but still real, because crews work faster in a house that is not full of furniture staying behind.

Furniture worth leaving behind

Not a rule, but this is what consistently fails the replace-versus-relocate test.

ItemWhy it usually should not move
Mattresses over eight years oldBulky, heavy, near the end of their life, and often cheaper to replace than to ship.
Flat-pack and particleboard furnitureRarely survives a second disassembly, and worth less than the cost of moving it.
Large sectionalsHigh volume, and frequently the piece that will not fit the new floor plan anyway.
Old appliancesHeavy, and the new place often has its own or has different connections.
Outdoor furnitureWeathered items rarely justify the space they take on a van.
Duplicate furnitureTwo households combining almost always ships things that get disposed of within a month.

Working alongside your mover

Some moving companies will refer this work; some customers arrange it themselves. Either is fine. What helps is scheduling the clearance a few days before the movers so there is no overlap in the driveway.

If you are a moving company reading this rather than a homeowner, there is a page for that.

FAQ

Furniture Removal Before Moving in Fort Worth — common questions

Should I do this before my moving quote?
Yes, particularly for a long-distance move. Surveyors quote what they see, so clearing first means the estimate reflects the move you are actually making.
Can you take furniture that is still in good condition?
Yes, and if you would rather it was donated than disposed of, say so and we will separate it. Acceptance is always up to the receiving organization.
What if I change my mind about a piece?
Nothing goes on the truck until it is confirmed on the day. Changing your mind is entirely normal.
Do you coordinate with the moving company?
We can, and for larger moves it is worth it. Usually all it takes is scheduling a few days apart so two trucks are not competing for the same driveway.
