Start where the decisions are easy

The instinct is to start at the front door and work through. That puts you in the living room on day one, deciding about photographs and furniture that means something, and it is why so many clearances stop after a weekend.

The better order runs from lowest emotional weight to highest: garage, attic, shed, then the spare rooms, then the utility spaces, then the rooms people actually live in, and personal effects last.

That order also happens to run from highest volume to lowest, so you clear most of the house before you reach anything difficult — which makes the rest feel achievable rather than overwhelming.

Highest volume, easiest decisions, and it creates staging space for everything else.

Four piles, not two

Keep and throw is not enough, and forcing every object into one of two categories is what causes the stalling. Add donate and undecided.

The undecided pile is the important one. It gives you somewhere to put the thing you cannot face deciding about, so the clearance keeps moving. Set a date to revisit it — usually the week before the move — and default anything still in it to donate or dispose.
