Two loads, same size, very different price

A quarter-truck of cardboard and packaging and a quarter-truck of ceramic tile occupy identical space. The tile weighs perhaps fifteen times more, and at the transfer station that difference is the entire cost.

This is why a construction quote asks what the material is rather than just how much there is, and why a quote given without that information is close to meaningless.

It also means that describing a load accurately is genuinely in your interest. A quote based on "half a truck of remodel debris" that turns out to be mortar-bed tile will have to be revised on the day, and nobody enjoys that conversation.

Carpet and underlay	Light but very bulky. Volume drives this one.
Insulation and packaging	Lightest. Almost pure volume.

What the material actually is
Roughly how much, in truck fractions or square footage
Whether it is inside or already outside
What floor it is on and the carry distance
Whether the site is active or empty
Whether anything might contain asbestos

Where a dumpster genuinely wins

For a long project producing debris continuously over weeks, a dumpster on site is usually the better economics — you are paying for the container rather than for a crew each time.

Where a truck wins is on speed, on projects with two or three debris bursts, in places where a permit or a driveway makes a container awkward, and anywhere the loading itself would otherwise eat a tradesperson’s day.
